Typewriter pull-up

An advanced pull-up variation where at the top of each rep you shift laterally from side to side along the bar. It builds unilateral pulling strength and is a key progression toward one-arm pull-ups.

How to Perform

  1. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  2. Pull yourself up until your chin clears the bar.
  3. At the top, shift your bodyweight to one side, keeping that arm bent while extending the other arm.
  4. Shift back through center and to the other side.
  5. Lower with control and repeat.

Common Mistakes

  • Not fully extending the opposite arm when shifting, reducing the unilateral load.
  • Using momentum to swing into the lateral position.
  • Losing shoulder stability during the lateral shift.
